Scouting on Display in the Park

Games and Scouting demonstrations will be part of this year's "Scoutapalooza" scheduled for Scoville Park in Oak Park, Illinois (Lake Street and Oak Park Avenue) on Sunday, September 14, 2008 from 12 Noon to 4:00pm.

Oak Park and River Forest Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts are teaming up to stage this year's "Scoutapalooza" to celebrate Scouting.  Boys and girls (elementary through high school) and their parents are invited to join in the games and talk to local troop and pack leaders about their programs.  Activities will include and all ages climbing wall, dunk tank, and moon walk (ages up to 12), plus many Scout games and demonstrations, including the well-known Pinewood Derby.  All activities are free!

"We have received many questions from parents about what types of Scouting programs are available here in the community.  We were at an event a couple summers ago in Scoville Park and we had a lot of folks who came up to us and said "Oh, I didn't' know Scouting was in Oak Park, I'd like to know more about it." says Boy Scout Troop 16 Assistant Scout Master, Tom Wetzel.  "This event is an easy and fun way to see what a wonderful variety of organization we have.  Scoutapalooza is designed to get the word out about Scouting and to give parents a chance to see what it's all about, Wetzel said.

"What we're hoping is that parents and kids just stop by and they get a chance to have a little fun, to play some games, and then talk to the individual troops or packs about what it is they do and now they do it," he said.

"We would love to see hundreds (of people)," Wetzel said.  "A lot of it will be dependent upon the weather.  We'll be there, regardless".

Donations of canned goods will be accepted for the Oak Park/River Forest Food Pantry.  U.S. Flags that are worn, torn, faded or badly soiled and need to be disposed of properly may also be brought to the park for a flag retirement ceremony at an appropriate time by a Scout Troop or
Pack.
